EcoPrint

Caldera exhibited at first edition of EcoPrint in Berlin on September 26-27 2012, ideally located in a former train station recycled to an exhibition hall near the Potsdamer Platz.
EcoPrint was designed to provide access to vision, discussion and answers for sustainable print innovation. This event focuses on the business of sustainability and the commercial benefits that it has by providing access to focused help, technical information and inspiration on the business of sustainability. The main goal was to provide answers for those that want to make change now and ‘ready’ their business for a successful future.
Up to 53 conferences, technical seminars and showcases took place during those two days, bringing together the key players in the market.

Why Caldera ?

It was a great opportunity to show Caldera involvement in a growing eco-friendly activity, thanks to its CostView product positioned as a dashboard for a manager sensitive to production costs, CostView now has an eco-sensitive dimension. Its newest and most important feature is the addition of a carbon footprint analysis tool. Users can now indicate the CO2 emitted by each of the elements of the job: ink, media, electricity, additional costs.

This initiative was warmly welcomed by visitors but also by our key partners : media, ink and printer manufacturers.

What is eco-friendly ?

The eco-friendly nature of the market for digital printing is built at first by the media manufacturers. Now, it is easy to find media without PVC, without solvent, or without other environmentally harmful substances. Nevertheless, they are also more numerous recycled or recyclable media. Cardboard was definitely in the spotlight, corrugated or honneycomb, dual sided or not, thick or thin, even some booth were only made out of cardboard. Competition seems to grow fast and the applications are more and more versatile.
The main demand about sustainability comes from consumers, so manufacturers become more and more involved in the design of eco-friendly products.

Media manufacturers are closely followed by ink manufacturers communicating more about their green product range getting rid of any harmful chemical. It was already true with water based inks, but it is now extended to other product ranges : pigments, UV, …

Digital printer manufacturers for their part have no direct role in this initiative green digital printing but will promote their compatibility with these media and these inks. The next step for them will be to communicate more about their printer power consumption while attempting to reduce it.

Therefore, software editors have now an opportunity to invest in R&D to provide control of the consumption of media and inks and measuring the environmental impact of printing by offering an estimation of the carbon footprint and energy consumption.
This is the way Caldera has chosen to add a sustainable and eco-friendly value to its software solutions.

Finally

Since we are entering an era where the extent of the environmental impact is essential, eco-responsible initiatives such as the Caldera one should enforce the cohesion between the different key components of digital printing, namely media manufacturers, ink manufacturers, machinery manufacturers and software editors.
The results of these initiatives will have value only if each of us play the game.
